Facebook Myths - Egg White treatment for Burns

Simple - IT'S A DANGEROUS MYTH

The accepted treatment for burns is
Go to the TAP and run clean cool water over the burn for at least 15 minutes
Cover the burn with a clean, non-fluffy dressing (cling film is ideal)

Do not waste time going to the fridge for eggs, then the drawer for a knife to crack the eggs, then to the cupboard for a bowl to put them in, then to the other drawer for a whisk…

Using egg whites for burns is dangerous for a number of reasons:
Anything that insulates a burn site will NOT help it heal and may introduce infections - that includes Egg, Butter and pretty much any other random foodstuff in your cupboard!
Uncooked eggs are a great medium to grow bacteria. Applying egg whites to burnt, raw, damaged skin can introduce bacteria that will make treating and healing the burn very difficult.
Egg allergies are quite common. Applying egg whites to broken skin may result in an immediate allergic reaction, this would not help the situation.
For serious burns, anything other than cooling the wound and getting emergency medical care is simply delaying treatment and allowing the burn to worsen.

Do Not
Remove anything stuck to the burn     Burst blisters     Touch the burn     Cough or sneeze on the burn     Use adhesive or fluffy dressings
